About This Item

London: Printed for W. Strahan; and T. Cadell, 1785. Book. Very good+ condition. Hardcover. Third edition. Octavo (8vo). Four volume set. Each volume newly rebound in brown quarter leather with five raised bands, two gilt-stamped leather labels, with marbled paper-covered boards. Original engraved bookplate in two volumes lifted and remounted onto the inside front cover. The bookplates match the name of the apparent first owner which is written on the endpapers of two volumes: William Grigson 1787. Complete with a large fold-out map/chart (with a minor expert repair at one fold), and ten additional folding maps/charts/views/plates. There is one extra-illustration in Vol. I; a portrait of Hawkesworth. The page facing this illustrations is toned by offsetting from the portrait. There is minor foxing scattered here and there, and a few pages with minor soiling, but this remains a generally clean text. Title continues: And Successfully performed by Commodore Byron, Captain Wallis, Captain Carteret, and Captain Cook, In the Dolphin, the Swallow, and the Endeavour: Drawn Up From the Journals which were kept by the several Commanders, and from the Papers of Sir Joseph Banks, Bart. Illustrated with Cuts and Charts, relative to Countries now first discovered, or hitherto but imperfectly known. Beddie 665. Vol. I: [xii], 362 pages. Vol. II: [viii], 447 pages. Vol. III: [viii], 416 pages. Vol. IV: [vi], 429 pages, followed by [ii] pages of publisher's advertisement. Third edition..
