One of 40 on japon imperial (not to be compared with the ordinary edition). An early work by Cappiello, the famous poster artist, with 18 marvelous , richly colored pochoir plates of contemporary actresses in their roles. They include two of Sarah Bernhardt, one in her role as Medea. Other actresses are Lavallière, Lucienne Bréval, Marthe Brandès, Marie-Louise Marsy, Lara, Yahne, Cassive, Simon Girard, Jeanne Granier, Cecile Sorel, Réjane, Mégard, Marcelle Lender, Mariette Sully and Lucie Gerard. "La Revue Blanche" was an important art and literary review which was involved with emerging artistic movements. Cappiello's style marked the culmination of the Belle Époque and the beginning of revolutionary new trends and modern advertising. One page preface followed by 18 pochoir plates of the leading actresses of the Fin-de-Siecle Parisian stage, with two plates of Sarah Bernhardt. Other actresses include Lucienne Breval, Marthe Brandes, Marie-Louise Marsy, Lara, Yahne, Rejane, Megard, Marcelle Lender, Lavalliere, Lucie Gerard, Cassive, Marthe Mellot, Simon Girard, Mariette Sully, Cecile Sorel and Jeanne Granier. The actresses are in costume, and Cappiello's approach is both highly stylized, yet also light and frothy, caricature perfectly befitting the frivolity of the period. Limited edition, copy 16 of 44 on Japan imperial paper. 18 color pochoir plates of contemporary actresses in their famous roles, including Sara Bernhardt, Marthe Brandes, Mariette Sully, Lucienne Breval, et al. An early caricature work by Cappiello before his acclaim as a poster artist. Cappiello started his career illustrating in journals: Le Rire, Le Cri de Paris, Le Sourire, L'Assiette au Beurre, La Baionnette, Femina, and others. In 1898, he moved to Paris, and his caricatures were published in Le Rire for the first time. He was the first poster artist to use bold figures popping out of black backgrounds. Bright, very fresh copy, most signatures unopened.
