Hardcover is half-bound in tan leather with blue-green, cream, and gold marbled paper-covered boards. Spine has five raised bands; four spine panels have gilt floral device. The other two panels have dark brown leather labels with gilt lettering: Upper label title: Geo. Eliot's Works, lower label title: Adam Bede. Top page edges gilt. Marbled endpapers. Tissued frontispiece; six additional black and white plates. Binding tight. Hinges NOT cracked. Leather is in good condition, with some crackle and rubbing to edges and corners. Pages lightly and uniformly tanned but still supple. Pages clean and unmarked. 544 pages. Title page has series name "Burt's Library of the World's Best Books" in a small illustrated medallion. Synopsis
Adam Bede, the first novel written by George Eliot (the pen name of Mary Ann Evans), was published in 1859. It was published pseudonymously, even though Evans was a well-published and highly respected scholar of her time. The novel has remained in print ever since, and is used in university studies of 19th century English literature.
