Adam Elsheimer (1578-1610) ist in der Weltgeschichte der Malerei immer noch ein grosser Unbekannter - zumindest fur das breite Publikum. Dabei hat sein schmales Ouvre - 49 auf kleine Kupfertafeln gemalte Olbilder, wenige Gouachen, Zeichnungen und Druckgraphiken - die Kunst seiner Zeit und spaterer Jahrhunderte nachhaltig verandert. Unter Malerkollegen, Sammlern und Kunstsinnigen waren seine Bilderfindungen schon zu Lebzeiten Legende. Vor allem seine Nachtstucke - darunter die 31 x 41 cm kleine Flucht nach Agypten - eroffneten den Zeitgenossen Galileis einen neuen, zugleich poetischen und naturwissenschaftlich fundierten Blick auf die Welt und den Sternenhimmel. Die kleinen Bilder, in denen sich Malkunst mit fruhen astronomischen Kenntnissen vereinen, wurden zu Wegbereitern der grossen idealen Landschaftskompositionen eines Claude Lorrain und wirkten bis zu Caspar David Friedrich in der deutschen Romantik nach.Keith Andrews' reich bebilderte Monographie mit Werkverzeichnis, nach wie vor ein Standardwerk der Kunstgeschichte, ist jetzt als leicht verkleinerte Studienausgabe erhaltlich.
