About This Item

Richmond: Printed by Thomas W. White, opposite the Bell Tavern, 1833. First Edition First Printing . Soft cover. Fair. 12mo. 21 pages. Soft cover removed from a larger bound volume. Lacks the outer wrappers, so that the first page is the title page. There are some spots of staining on the center of the title page. Text is a little toned but generally clean. The individual gatherings are in danger of separating. Housed in a removable plastic sleeve with a board backing. George Edmund Badger (1795-1866) was a superior court judge, Secretary of the Navy, and was a U.S. Senator, originally from New Bern, North Carolina. In 1828 he supported Andrew Jackson as President, but he opposed the National Bank, so he joined the newly formed Whig Party. In 1840 he was appointed as Secretary of the Navy, and he did much to modernize the Navy, setting the foundation for the Atlantic Fleet and investing in research for new types of Ordinance and weapons. At the outset of the Civil War he was a delegate from Wake County to the Secession Convention of 1861. Scarce. [Thornton 506]
