About This Item

Raleigh, N.C.: Printed at the Recorder Office / Published by Order of the Society, 1846. First Edition First Printing . Soft cover. Good. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. Octavo. 26 pages. Soft cover bound in original pink printed wrappers. The wrappers show wear and have sunning about the edges and soiling from handling. A sound copy. Signed in pencil at the top of the front wrapper, "J. A. Jarratt" or "S. A. Jarratt." Now housed in a removable board back plastic sleeve. The text block is sound, and the text is a bit toned and has just a little sporadic foxing. Bartholomew Figures Moore (1801-1878) was a North Carolina attorney and politician and was largely a Union loyalist during the Civil War He was born in Halifax County and graduated from UNC in 1820 and was a trustee of the University 1840-1868 and then again from 1871 until his death. He was a member of the NC Constitutional Convention of 1835 and was Attorney General of North Carolina (1848-1851). Although he agreed with many of the Southern grievances before the Civil War, he did not support Secession. When the Confederate States opened court in Raleigh, he picked up his bag and walked out, saying that he would practice in only at the State Court level. He continued to practice law after the Civil War and returned to practice in the Federal Courts. In this address he admonishes the students on the dangers of following destructive or immoral paths and reflects on the current (1846) "age of Revolution" compared to that time in which he grew up.
