About This Item

Paris, Corrozet, 1553. This book is about the funeral ceremonies of the ancients and the moderns, the embalming of bodies, the use of the "mummy" as medicine, and various other drugs or medicinal substances. "He clarified the use of bitumen, which the ancient Egyptians had used for mummifying corpses. Its agglutinative and antiputrefactive properties had induced physicians to use it therapeutically." Dictionary of Scientific Biography 1, 596. "We should be grateful for the survey of the petroleum which he left us in his 'De admirabili operum antiquorum', which shows that in many parts of Europe, including Italy, seepages were exploited in the sixteenth century and primitive applications of petroleum had already taken sufficient root to make it a commercial commodity at many fairs and markets." (R.J. Forbes, Pierre Belon and Petroleum) - -.
