Adolph Menzel war der bedeutendste deutsche Realist des 19. Jahrhunderts. Er schuf zahlreiche Bilder zur preußischen Geschichte und insbesondere zu Ereignissen aus dem Leben Friedrichs des Großen. Genauso bekannt wie der Historienmaler Menzel ist auch der Gestalter des modernen Lebens. Sein Blick erfaßte Neues und Zukunftsträchtiges in der Kultur seines Landes und seiner Zeit. Detailversessen malte und zeichnete Menzel das Treiben m der Großstadt und die Arbeit in industriellen Großbetrieben. Früher als jeder andere hat er mit seinem Eisenwalzwerk im Jahr 1875 die Widersprüche seiner Epoche abgebildet. Wolfgang Hütt schildert ausführlich Menzels menschlichen und künstlerischen Werdegang und deutet vor diesem Hintergrund sein umfangreiches Werk.
