A truly magnificent provenance for this work which "shows how the extension of military operations to civilian populations and property, and the increasingly destructive nature of total warfare, menace the very future of humanity and Western civilization. On page vii Veale refers specifically to Barnes by stating "in accordance with what Dr. Harry Elmer Barnes has called 'The Historical Blackout,' the bulk of the British press, newspaper and periodical alike, rigidly ignored the [first edition of this book].
