About This Item

Printed for R. Baldwin and M. Richardson, London, 1765. Third edition; first published in 1751. Full leather binding; 4 vols. . See description /No Jacket. The third edition of this rumbustious tale was the last to be published in Smollett's lifetime. The "lady of quality" mentioned in the subtitle is Frances Anne Vane, Viscountess Vane. Each of the four volumes has the armorial bookplates of Milward Rowe (an official to the Lords of the Treasury), along with the signature C.G. Rowe. All four volumes are currently broken-backed with remnants of the gilt decoration to spines and with 5 raised bands. With the exception of vol. 1, where there is a crude repair between pp. 144 and 145, and vol. 3 which has separated between pp. 98 and 99, they are intact. Binding copies only.
