About This Item

Octavo, 9 x 6 1/2 inches (227 x 165 mm); number 40 of 50 copies on Japon, drawn, etched, and hand-colored throughout by Clara Tice with pictorial title; 6 pictorial plates with tissue guards captioned in red by hand, 6 text pages within decorative borders, and pictorial colophon; printed on rectos only. Dedication copy: signed and inscribed by the artist "to Mr Carl Weeks, sincerely, Clara Tice" and with small sketch of naked lady in pink crayon on front free endpaper; Tice's own copy with her etched bookplate showing a naked woman and peacock, plus that of Carl Weeks; original burnt orange crushed morocco, gutter cracked, five raised bands, titled in gilt on upper cover with gilt frame, inner gilt dentelles, uncut. CLARA TICE (1888 - 1973) drew racy illustrations at a time when ladies did not engage in such things, and when Anthony Comstock's Society for the Suppression of Vice was very active - and Tice attracted their unwanted attention - but, in 1915, it helped to jump-start her career. Vanity Fair dubbed Tice the "QUEEN OF GREENWICH VILLAGE". According to The New York Times (27 June 1920) she was the first woman in Greenwich village to bob her hair. Tice also created a cartoon strip and posters. She is included in the New York Dada Movement.
CARL WEEKS (1876 - 1962) was a cosmetics manufacturer and businessman, entrepreneur, and philanthropist in Des Moines Iowa. His home there is now a museum, filled with antiques and rarities -except this book.
