In 'The 'Aeneid' Virgil continues the story of the Trojan War after the death of Hector, which is the point at which The Iliad ends. His hero is the Trojan Aeneas, the son of Venus, goddess of love, and of a mortal,Anchises.Virgil describes the discovery of the wooden horse, which brings destruction to Troy, and the escape from the burning city of Aeneas with his father,Anchises, and his young son, Ascanius. The gods destine Aeneas to be the founder of a mighty race - the Romans, but Juno, the Queen of heaven, hates the Trojans, and through her plotting Aeneas encounters many dangers. He falls in love with Dido,Queen of Carthage, but is forced to abandon her. When his father dies,Aeneas descends into the underworld,as Anchises instructs him in a vision, and there he is shown the glorious future of Rome. When at last the Trojans reach the shore of Italy,Juno stirs up the enmity of the people of Latium, and a long and bitter struggle ensues. This vigorous retelling of 'The Aeneid' is a companion to Barbara Leonie Picard's 'The Odyssey of Homer' and 'The Iliad of Homer' (see my book IDs' rja1100423 and rja1100523 respecctively),and, like them,is illustrated by Joan Kiddell-Monroe. Joan Kiddell-Monroe (1908-1972),born Clacton-on-Sea. Studied at Willesden and Chelsea Schools of Art. Worked initially in an advertising studio and then turned freelance. In 1936 she married Webster Murray, illustrator for 'The Tatler' and 'The Sketch' and portrait painter. From 1944,she concentrated on book illustration. She travelled in Africa during the 1950's,and eventually settled in Mallorca.Joan Kiddell-Monroe was one of the outstanding professional illustrators of her generation, and her drawings combined a fluent,well-modulated line with a rhythmic and elegant decorative sense. She had a keen eye for detail, and this contributed to her ability to adapt her style in sympathy with the varied sources and subjects of her texts. Her versatility is clearly seen in the Oxford Myths and Legends series - folk tales collected from many parts of the world. She was particularly fond of drawing animals, and often included them in her designs. She worked mainly in black and white, sometimes with one added colour, and sometimes with the full colour range.
