Vivid selections from travel books, journals, and missionary accounts give firm evidence that, contrary to widespread opinion, strong pan-African elements of social and cultural life were maintained under plantation conditions -- especially in the areas of worship, belief, entertainment, and other dimensions of expressive culture. Roger D. Abrahams and John F. Szwed have arranged the documents primarily according to the major areas of expressive life. Introductions to the book as a whole and to each section explore many of the issues in the continuing debate over the nature of Afro-American culture. In an appendix the authors provide for comparative purposes accounts of slave lives in the southernern United States.

In addition to keeping regular hours at the storefront location, Lighthouse Books participate as a vender in about a dozen book fairs, antiques shows, map fairs and related events each year.
