About This Item

London: Oxford University Press, 1975 0192121960. First edition. VG. Hardback. No DW. No inscriptions or annotations. 507 pages including over 20 pages of index. 'After Babel' created a sensation on publication in 1975, quickly establishing itself as both a controversial and seminal study of literary theory. Dr. Steiner's is the first attempt, certainly since the late eighteenth century, at a systematic investigation of the phenomenology and processes of translation, and asks whether a theoretic model is, in fact, possible. George Steiner has been Professor of English and Comparative Literature at the Universities of Geneva. and Oxford. He lives in Cambridge, England, where he has been Extraordinary Fellow at Churchill College at the University of Cambridge since 1969. His books include The Death of Tragedy, Language in Silence, In Bluebeard's Castle, and On Difficulty and Other Essays. He has written for The New Yorker for over thirty years, contributing over two hundred reviews. This is a heavy book which may require extra postage. .
