London: Lawrence & Wishart, 1956. First Edition. . Hardback. Good/Fair. First edition, first printing, hardback in dustwrapper. 19 × 12.5cm, 239pp. This copy was Roy Fuller's review copy. He has signed the ffep in pen and he has made pencil notes on the back of the publisher's compliments slip. From the wrapper, "This is a book that wills toke the fires of controversy, for here is one man's quest in search of the reasons for the profound unease ans sense of crisis that has affected British writers in the past two decades. In twenty years time - 1976 - the world will be only a few years away from the date of Orwell's phantasmagoria. Looking backwards from a point midway between that tortured conception of a mind gone sour and the progressive thought and the bright hope of the writers of the thirties opens a wide field for an analytical survey of the reasons of this change. In an extremely provocative analysis of general trends in British writing today, Jack Lindsay contends that there is again a growing realisation that the integrity of an author's work can only be maintained if he aligns himself with the basic struggle of the people". Condition: The book itself is in good condition, the pages a little toned but the binding secure. The dustwrapper has sun-fading and quite heavy chipping and creasing to the edges.
