About This Item

The sole UK printing published by The Centaur Press in 1986. Limited edition with this being number 59' of only 96 copies in quarter cloth with original cover paper. There were also four special copies issued in full morocco. The book has been signed by the illustrator to the limitation page. Printed on BFK Rives paper. The BOOK is in near Fine condition with just a little pushing at the spine tips. Seven full page B/W wood engravings and poems by the author / illustrator. The book is protected in a removable Mylar archival cover. During World War II, Kingsley Cook served as a wireless operator in the Merchant Navy and was shipwrecked in October 1941 and spent several days in an open boat in the Mediterranean. His ship, the Empire Guillemot, on route from Malta, was attacked and sunk. He was then held captive in PoW camps in Algeria for a year. While at sea and in the camps, Cook continued to sketch and, when possible, paint. In due course, the War Artists' Advisory Committee acquired some nine examples of these works and they are now held in the Imperial War Museum. Scarce. More images available on request. Ashton Rare Books welcomes direct contact.
