INSCRIBED and SIGNED by the author on the front endpaper likely to director Rex Ingram: "For/Rex/from/Willie/W. Somerset Maugham." Ingram adapted Maugham's 1908 novel THE MAGICIAN into a film with the same title in 1926. The silent film was about a magician's efforts to acquire the blood of a maiden for his experiments to create life.
