About This Item
Paris: Janet et Cotelle [PN 104], 1825. Folio. Bifolium. 3, [i] (blank) pp. Titling to head of p.1; incipit "Votre cour devint mon azile..."
Slightly worn and soiled; spine reinforced with Japanese paper; bookseller's and publisher's handstamps to page 1. Oedipe à Colone, a tragédie lyrique set to a libretto by Nicolas-François Guillard after Sophocles, was first performed at Versaillles on 4 January 1786.
"Oedipe à Colone was written during 1785 and performed for the first time at Versailles. Intrigues against the composer led to the abandonment of a revival at Fontainebleau, but by the time of Sacchini's death in October 1786 a production at the Opéra must have been planned. It was given there on 1 February 1787 and was an immediate and lasting success: it was performed more often - 583 times up to 1830 - than any other operas of its time, including Gluck's." Julian Rushton in Grove Music Online.
