About This Item

Decorative front and rear glossy cardboard covers are held together with a staple binding that is intact with the first and last pop-up page glued to the inside cardboard. The cardboard spine show wear at both ends with a tear and more rubbing on the right side. The spine also appears more crocked on the right side (see photos). All corners show some wear and bumping with the most on the rear left corner. All the pop-ups are colorful, vibrant and are functional with only one crease to the tail wing of the plane. Light age tanning throughout and smudges to some pages but there is no tearing along the fan-fold seams. Otherwise, the pages are clean with no tears, chips, creases, or previous owner marks. Unpaginated but approximately 14 pages. Oblong design.

Note: A later version was published by The Golden Press of Australia, copywrite 1954, with Elizabeth Beecher, Ralph Heindahl, and Ali Dempster credited as the adaptors thus it is believed the British version as an earlier copywrite date.

Every other page spread has either a pop-up: The Coach Trip, Boats at the Dock, Train at the Rail Station, Plane at the Airport or has only text and an illustration with no pop-up: A Visit to the Docks, At the Rail Station, A Busy Airport. This is a scarce edition by this publisher not usually found in the US.

Pop-ups - defined as 3-dimensional paper illustrations designed to self-erect with the turning of a page – became firmly established in the twentieth century when the term "pop – up" first appears in 1930. By insinuating dynamic action into the reading process, they offered a heightened animated experience that echoed the parallel development of motion pictures and eventually, television.
