About This Item

London: Longmans, Green and Co.. Fair with no dust jacket. 1897. First Edition. Hardcover. 70 pp + (ii). Index. From the description of the Alcuin Club which commissioned this work: "...there was no Society which dealt with the practical study of ceremonial, or the arrangement of churches, their furniture, and ornaments, in accordance with the rubrics of the Book of Common Prayer. To encourage this study the Alcuin Club was formed, which although practical, is intended to work upon purely historical and of course English lines. Strict obedience to the Book of Common Prayer is the guiding principle of the work of the Club." Dun paper hard boards are aged and darkened, bit rubbed at edges, ribbed cloth spine is sunned and cloth has chipped away or deteriorated over most of the spine. Interior has markings of a rector John Campbell of the Church of the Mediator in New York, first blank is very foxed, title page has newer Episcopal ownership stamp, there are a few light pencil marks throughout but otherwise clean and sturdy. A nice old copy of a scarce item.; 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall .
