About This Item
Nagoya, Japan: Commercial Art Center, 1986. Top corner of pages creased, else textblock is clean and tight. Sticker stain on front cover, crease to top edge of back cover. From the Japanese point of view, this is the Japanese Army & Navy occupation, defense and evacuation of the Aleutian Islands during World War II; The photographs are poorly reproduced, having been mimeographed for this proof sheet; However, this publication nicely illustrates the comradeship between Japanese and American [10th Mtn Division] Mountain Troops that developed and grew following World War II; Includes the account of SSgt Sherman L. Smith of the US 87th Mountain Infantry who landed on Kiska Island after the Japanese Army evacuated, and how Smith found a booby-trapped Japanese Sun flag inside a cave. Forty-three years later, the flag was returned to its owner in Japan. 128p. Key words include: WWII 10th Mountain Division, 87th Mountain Infantry, WWII Aleutian Islands Campaign, Japanese and American Mountain Soldiers, Kiska Island Campaign, Kiska Japanese Veteran's Society, Battlefield Reports From Kiska Garrison, Chukyo Alpine Club, Chu Kyoh Mountain Climbers Club, Battle of Attu.. Wraps. Very Good. Illus. by Photographs/Maps. 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. Paperback.
