Philadelphia: J. B. Lippincott Company Book. Good. Hardcover. 1st Edition. (1961), 4to, 319pp, index, bibliography, eight color plates and sixteen b&w. Moderate wear and soiling, else G. The painter Alexander Wilson, (1766-1813), was born in Scotland, and came to America in 1794. His most famous work is AMERICAN ORNITHOLOGY, in nine volumes, 1808-1814, but he also wrote poetry and essays on nature. In an interesting turn of events, he met John James Audubon in Louisville, Kentucky, in March of 1810, and was about to sell a subscription of his work to Audubon. But Rozier, Audubon's partner, speaking in French, pointed out to Audubon that his own paintings were far superior to Wilson's, and Audubon declined to subscribe. It was shortly thereafter, when leaving Louisville, that Wilson observed a flock of Passenger Pigeons, that took several hours to fly over, which he estimated to number more than a billion birds..
