About This Item

New York: Dodd, Mead & Company, 1898. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. Bertram Grosvenor Goodhue. 8vo. ix, [4], 2-89. List of characters. With four full-page plates, printed in red and black. Decorated endpapers printed in orange. Bound in cream paper-covered boards with striking full-color pictorial illustration on the front cover, and a detailed floral design on the rare cover, red lettering printed on spine. Dust-soiling to top edge; spine darkened, light wear to cover edges. Withal, a sturdy, presentable copy. First printing of the play compiled from Lewis Carroll works. Title page commentary: "Originally presented for the benefit of The Society of Decorative Art, at The Waldorf, New York. March thirteenth, 1897, and now for the first time printed."

A trifecta of subject, printing and design in one book: Lewis Carroll's stories, exquisite printing by D. B. Updike, at his Merrymount Press, and charming illustrations by Bertram Grosvenor Goodhue. Indeed, it's a sought-after title for being an early Merrymount effort, for having Goodhue illustrations, and for simply being an uncommon Lewis Carroll book. For more on Goodhue, please see Bertram Grosvenor Goodhue. Architect and Master of Many Arts (AIA, 1925). A fragile book, offered here in handsome condition.
