About This Item

London: Macmillan And Company, 1871. Hardcover. Very Good. John Tenniel. Early printing with "Twenty-Seventh Thousand" stated on title page. Very good plus in original light red cloth with gilt titles and decoration, and gilt page edges (with small dark abrasion/stain along fore-edge). A touch of soiling to boards and minor rubbing to rear board, with very slightly sunned. Hinges firm and binding tight. Small bookseller labels at lower corners of front and rear pastedowns; pages are bright and clean throughout. Laid in is a clipped inscription mounted to a card, SIGNED BY ILLUSTRATOR JOHN TENNIEL: "Yours very truly, John Tenniel. July 9th 1906." A very attractive early copy of this classic, with the added bonus of Tenniel's rather scarce signature.

Synopsis

Lewis Carroll's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and its sequel, Through the Looking Glass and What Alice Found There , tell the story of a young girl in a fantasy world filled with peculiar, anthropomorphic creatures. The classic tale of literary nonsense takes the reader on an exploration of logic and absurdities. The Alice books — sometimes combined or referred to with the abbreviated title Alice in Wonderland — have been translated into at least 97 languages with over a hundred different editions. The books have also been adapted numerous times into films (both live-action and cartoon), plays, and musicals.
