About This Item
London: John Bringhurst, 1685. Presumed First Edition. Softcover. Octavo, 27 pages. In Very Good condition. Side-sewn pamphlet. Shows light wear to edges and corners of front and back pages, moderate chipping the length of the bound edge, and moderate age-toning overall (with light soiling along top-edge of front cover). Interior pages have light plus age-toning throughout. RW Consignment. Shelved case 7. A late pamphlet by English Dissenter and founder of the Religious Society of Friends, George Fox (1624 - 1691). Here, Fox argues for a scriptural basis to religious toleration amongst Christians.
After the Restoration of Charles II in 1660, religious persecution of religious dissenters continued, and Fox was arrested as late as 1683.
He continued to advocate for toleration, however, and this pamphlet anticipates the Toleration Act of 1689 by four years. References: ESTC R35518; Wing F1938. 1353569. Shelved Dupont Bookstore.
