About This Item

London, Glasgow, and New York: George Routledge & Sons, 1889. First Edition. Boards. Very Good. Kate Greenaway. Kate Greenaway. First Edition. [24] pages. 4 x 3 inches. Original black pictorial boards over dark brown spine cloth. Bright orange endpapers with yellow tinted page edges. Hinges professionally repaired with sympathetic tinted japanese tissue (addressing cracked gutters, a common failing with this title). Minor wear otherwise to the extremities. Previous owner gift inscription on front flyleaf. Minor soiling to 2 middle pages, browning to half title and last pages and the usual mild offsetting of the colored illustrations to the opposite pages. Boards. Printed by Edmund Evans.

A variant of Schuster & Engen's first issue (9:7a), here with orange endpapers instead of bright yellow and dark brown spine cloth instead of black cloth. The De Grummond Collection in Hattiesburg, Mississippi has an inscribed copy by K. G. with "bright orange" endpapers.

LITERATURE:
Schuster, Thomas E. and Engen, Rodney: "Printed Kate Greenaway, A Catalogue Raisonne", London: 1986. p 32.
