Newburypor: Printed and sold by John Mycal, 1777. [24]pp. including large woodcut vignette of solar system on titlepage and printer's advertisement on final printed page to purchase rags or exchange rags for paper. 12mo. Titlepage moderately agetoned and dampstained, spine reinforced. Moderate agetoning, dampstaining, and soiling throughout. A good copy. A Revolutionary-era Massachusetts almanac compiled by Daniel George, a student of astronomy at Haverhill who issued New England almanacs in various Massachusetts towns between 1776 and 1787. This third Daniel George almanac has a woodcut illustration of the solar system on the titlepage, and a small woodcut of an eclipse in the text. In addition to a three-page explanation of the solar system and the calendar for the year, the almanac includes "an account of some extraordinary rarities of nature," a method for rearing turkeys "successfully practiced among the Swedes," and a recipe "to make wine as good as most that is imported and much cheaper." The work concludes with a three- page list of the roads and distances to the principle towns from Boston, "with the names of those who keep houses of entertainment." DRAKE 3271. EVANS 15306.
