About This Item

London: Printed for H.D. Symonds, [c.1792-93]. 12mo. This is a volume of the Novelist's Magazine, so titled on the spine, collecting several novels. Full calf, titled in gilt on the spine; the front cover and first few leaves lacking, considerable chipping to edges, some folded page corners, scattered foxing, a tear across the first text leaf of Rasselas, but internally quite clean and very good otherwise. This volume contains, in this order: Oliver Goldsmith: The Vicar of Wakefield (2 volumes, 174 pages, the two volumes consecutively paged). It lacks the frontispiece and title page of volume 1, however the frontispiece and title page of volume 2 are present. / Laurence Sterne: Sentimental Journey Through France And Italy, By Mr. Yorick. A New Edition. Frontispiece and one engraving in the text. 111 pages. / Samuel Johnson: Rasselas, Prince of Abissinia. A Tale. A New Edition. Frontispiece. 105 pages. / John Hawkesworth: Almoran and Hamet: An Oriental Tale. In Two Volumes. Frontispiece and title page to Volume 1 only. 94 pages, the two volumes consecutively paged. / Henry Fielding: The History of the Adventures of Joseph Andrews, and his Friend Mr. Abraham Adams. Written in Imitation of the Manner of Cervantes, Author of Don Quixotte. In Two Volumes. 232 + 226 pages. Frontispieces and title pages for both volumes (the frontispiece for the second volume is bound in reversed, not facing the title), as well as an additional plate in Volume 1, at page 121; The Dead Ass: (this belongs in the Sterne book, and is evidently misbound into this location). Several of the engravings bear the imprint of H.D. Symonds, dated 1792, suggesting that they were prepared for this edition. This appears to be an early reprinting of works from James Harrison's Novelist's Magazine, which began in 1779 and ran through the 1780s. These Symonds editions are scarce, despite the likelihood that they were issued in great numbers.
