About This Item

New-York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1879. First edition. Very good.. First printing of this collection of verses by the influential children's book author, in a "gilt-extra" binding. The BIBLIOGRAPHY OF AMERICAN LITERATURE notes that ALONG THE WAY was available in both a "gilt binding" and a "gilt-extra binding" (467); this copy is an example of the latter. 7'' x 5''. Original blue pictorial gloth binding with gilt stamping. Edges stained red. Brown endpapers with ornamental acanthus pattern. viii, 136 pages. Contemporary owner names to verso of front flyleaf, first blank, half title page, and page 51: Nellie Brueningham and Ella Luecke. Partially erased pencil math problems to verso of front flyleaf; partially erased pencil repetitions of the name "Nellie" to half-title page. Boards with light wear and some spotting to cloth; bumping to spine ends. Front hinge cracked but firm. Leaves with scattered faint soil, spine cracked at one opening. Sound.
