About This Item
Boston: Small, Maynard & Company / Heintzemann Press, 1900. Second Edition. Hardcover. G (Covers are substantially soiled or aged; interior pages are lightly tanned along edges; text and plates are good.). Gray board with lighter gray cloth spine; illus. flyleaves, unpaginated, illus. in BW and red. A merry and poetic turn-of-the-century romp through the ABCs of well-known folks of the day. The rhyme for each letter mentions individuals who are then depicted in the neighboring illustration. Both text and illustrations are rendered by American artist Oliver Herford (1863-1935), known popularly as "the American Oscar Wilde." Two couplets that are most fun are: "Q is the Queen, so noble and free -- For further particulars look under V" and "V is Victoria, noble and true -- For further particulars look under Q." One of 2000 copies. You know you want to see it.
