London is the only city in the world where you could ever find Gilbert and George sharing space with the Gherkin and the Globe while the Great Fire burns and a gin drinker glugs her favorite tipple, and where members of the Bloomsbury Group hail a black cab while barrage balloons hover over Broadcasting House during the Blitz.
In 'A London Alphabet',Christopher Brown presents a series of wonderfully whimsical lino-cuts illustrating every aspect of London past and present, including personalities, buildings, monuments, legends, historic events, and other metropolitan icons. From Dickens,Dr Johnson,Tower Bridge, and the Shard to the Diamond Jubilee,Wimbledon, pigeons, and jellied eels, all London life is here.A born-and- bred Londoner,Brown recounts his own memories of growing up in the capital, and also describes how he creates his distinctive prints. His unique, often humorous take on London will delight anyone who lives in or visits the city.
Christopher Brown has lived in London all his life,to date.He studied at the Royal College of Art,where he met and assisted the master of the lino-cut,Edward Bawden.
He is an illustrator and print-maker,senior lecturer in Graphic Arts at Liverpool School of Art and Design, and a visiting lecturer in Fashion Menswear at Central Saint Martins and in MA Illustration at Camberwell College of Arts. His clients include the Folio Society,The Guardian, the Sunday Times, the New Yorker, the Bay Tree Food Company and Few and Far.
His work has been exhibited widely in the United Kingdom, including at the Royal Academy of Arts, the Fry Gallery, the Victoria and Albert Museum and St Jude's Gallery, and he illustrated 'A Pack of Dogs: An Anthology' (Merrell,2010).
Jasper Conran is an authority on British style and one of the UK's leading fashion designers, with a successful career spanning more than thirty years. He has applied his signature irreverant but classically British elegance to clothing, fragrance, eyewear, interiors and homewares.
In 2008 he was appointed OBE for services to the retail industry.
