About This Item

Hagen.: Erschienen im Folkwang., 1919.. Later black cloth-backed grey paper-covered boards, vignette and titles to front board in black, original publisher's printed wrappers retained.. Folio. (392 x 330 mm).. Vignette title, list of plates, twenty-two tipped-in monochrome plates and eight colour plates, all after drawings by Taut. The work is divided into 5 sections, each of which has a title. Bruno Taut's remarkable and fantastic 'Alpine Architektur'. Taut illustrates in 30 delicately drawn plates his proposal to transform an entire Alpine range from the lakes of northern Italy to the Monte Rosa into a fantastic landscape of shrines and crystal-lined caves ('Kristallhaus'). His second stage, 'earth-crust architecture', ('Architektur der Berge') proposed that all the continents be covered with glass and precious stones in the form of 'ray domes' and 'sparkling palaces', while the final 'stellar' ('Sternbau') phase proposed the transformation of stars and planets of the cosmos in a similar fashion. Mountains were a major theme for the Expressionists, as Taut so well represents in the present work.
