Language: English. Weight: 7.6 ounces. Mass Market Paperback. Orson Scott Card (born August 24, 1951) is an American writer best-known for his science fiction works. He is the first and (as of 2023) only person to win a Hugo Award and a Nebula Award in consecutive years, winning both awards for his novel Ender's Game (1985) and its sequel Speaker for the Dead (1986). The Seven-volume Locus Fantasy Award-winning series 'The Tales of Alvin Maker' was published between 1987 and 2003. Card's works are influenced by classic literature but he often uses tropes from genre fiction. This book 'Alvin Journeyman' , the fourth book in The Tales of Alvin Maker series, won a Locus Award. Alvin is a Maker, the first Maker to be born in a century. Now a grown man and a journeyman smith, Alvin has returned to his family in the town of Vigor Church. He will share in their isolation, work as a blacksmith, and try to teach anyone who wishes to learn the knack of being a Maker. For Alvin has had a vision of the Crystal City he will build, and he knows that he cannot build it alone, but he has left behind in Hatrack River enemies as well as true friends. His ancient foe, the Unmaker, whose cruel whispers and deadly plots have threatened Alvin's life at every turn, has found new hands to do his work of destruction. This is an imaginative, captivating tale of how Our Country might have been in some sort of parallel dimension. Slight changes in place names, historical characters with just a bit of a twist of the history found in the history books, add a pinch of folklore and magick: you come up with a new history unlike any tall tale of the old frontier. Delightful, humorous, heavy with love, the strength of family ties and acts of daring and bravery. ; The Tales of Alvin Maker; Vol. 4; 12mo 7" - 7½" tall; xiv, 400 pages .
