(1st edition) Large, thicker, heavy book, darker red cloth, ornate gilt border and lettering bright on spine, 353 lightly browned pages, very slight foxing in spots inside covers and adjacent end papers. On first front end paper in ink: "To my sweet friends Hazel and Durward with greater love than ever--Bertita. Pre-publication copy--#1. May 3, 1941." DJ glossy red with yellow and black lettering, an ornate silver and blue border to color portrait of royal person at center front, spine faded, white back very slightly soiled with photo of author at top back left. DJ is worn and torn with several tiny chips to most edges. Fair DJ/Fine book.
