About This Item

Tight, square, uncreased spine. Clean, unmarked interior. Some light edge-wear. Cover design by Julie Miller. Cover photo by Löffler & Friends. Softbound. Ambidextrous, an autobiographical novel set in the 1950s of the author's youth, was burned at the docks upon arival in the UK when it was first pubished in 1985, due to outrage over its depictions of adolescent same-sex atraction. A prolific writer, Picano also cofounded the post-Stonewall literary group, The Violet Quill, and two influential queer publishing houses, the Seahorse Press and the Gay Presses of New York, original publishers of Harvey Fierstein's Torch Song Trilogy. Picano, in recent interviews, on Larry Kramer: 'I never saw him dancing. Never once. And I never heard him laugh out of happiness.' On Rudolf Nureyev: 'He grabbed my ass when I was standing on a street corner in Chelsea, trying to get me into his Jaguar convertible.' And on the Stonewall riots: 'That was the headline for the Daily Mirror, "Queens Throw Hissy Fit."' 336 pp.
