About This Item

Near Fine. Ninth plate ambrotype. Matted with preserver to approximately 2" x 2.5". In molded black leather case, lined in gold. blue figured velvet plush interior. The case is near fine; the image displays a small crack in the upper corner not effecting the image, likely original seal, very good. Image shows a seated well-dressed young Black woman in a print dress with white collar and cuffs with a broach at her neck; the broach and her earrings slightly tinted in gold. The subjects is unidentified, but the case, mat, and preserver would suggest around 1850. Ambrotypes of Black American's have become very uncommon.
