About This Item

Near Fine. Sixth plate ambrotype. Matted with preserver to approximately 2.5" x 3.5". In heavily molded black thermoplastic Union case, with gold lozenge on both front and back. The image is near fine, as is the case. Image shows a White baby posed in a perambulator, with a young Black girl standing and wearing a simple shift dress, with one hand seemingly holding the arm of the baby still, the better to achieve a clear image (the process took several seconds, and could be marred by excessive movement). The girls's dress has a faint hint of pink tinting. In the background is a relatively grand three story white house with a white picket fence. The subjects are undated and unidentified, but the case component seem circa 1855. A highly unusual outdoor ambrotype - like daguerreotypes, most were taken indoors in studio settings where both light and excess activity could be controlled. Combining the outdoor setting with the subject of a young Black girl, this would be a highly desirable image.
