About This Item

Some light wear at the corners, otherwise a very good copy. Essays on education, women's suffrage and related topics. With the author's presentation inscription, "To Duncan Pell Esq. A New Year's Gift from the author. New Year,1870". Pell was Lieutenant Governor from Rhode Island, and is from a long line of public servants. Humphreys was a well known educator in England, but fled his country in shame with another man's wife, both of them abandoning their spouses and many children and owing thousands of dollars. He became a U.S. citizen and built a good reputation as an educator in New York and Rhode Island. The book ends with a solicitation for private students to be tutored by Humphreys in his home. It would appear that his intent was to instill our children with the values that eluded him.
