About This Item

Osička (1888-1949) was a Czech scholar and writer who earned his Ph.D. at Northwestern University and wrote a number of books about life and culture in the United States. This book, co-authored with his wife, is a light-hearted series of impressions about American daily life, many of them with a left-leaning orientation, with titles such as "The noon break of an American worker," "How they drank in America," "The American movies" or "Central Park in the winter." With five delightful drawings by Ladislav Süss, who along with Karel Teige was one of the founding members of the Czech avant-garde formation Devětsil, showing urban scenery in New York, a movie theatre in Chicago, a woman barber and an "American man" pushing a child in a stroller.

As of January 2024, KVK, OCLC show five copies in North America.
