About This Item

Good. 1864. 1st Edition; 1st Printing. Hardcover. The book is in Good condition and was issued without a dust jacket. The book covers have edge wear, rubbing and toning / foxing. There is some fraying to the spine ends, corners and spine joints along with some edge tearing to the spine joints and cloth to the spine. The former owner has tried to glue the front hinge as a repair. The text pages are generally clean and bright though there are spots of foxing. The rear endpaper has been removed. This book includes an early description of the game of baseball. There are copies of the first edition which include the first color illustrations of the game and others which lack the plates -- this is one of the latter. There are black and white illustrations of the game, along with 10 pages of rules (including this: "If an adversary stops the ball with his hat or cap, or takes it from the hands of a party not engaged in the game, no player can be put out unless the ball shall first have been settled in the hands of the pitcher." ). .
