About This Item
New York: Edmund and George W. Blunt, 1827. eleventh edition. Full leather. Good. 6 x 9 in. xvi, 676 pp., plus appendix [4 pp] plus adverts [16 pp]. Full contemporary brown calf with black calf spine label. Condition is GOOD ; front joint is cracked and holding only at the upper inch. The spine has some loss along that upper end, with loss of about 1/3 of the label. The text binding is pulled at pg 39, with the following 8 pgs loose but present. Twp pgs of text at pg 131 are detached but present. Pg 445 is detached but present. Covers also show long use, with slight loss at corners, which are bumped, and some surface wear and a few spots of paper stuck on. Text has some sections that are browned but readable, overall some toning and minor foxing. Ffep is lacking, if one existed. Title pg has some faint water stains. On some early pgs there are notes in ink in the margin, in a contemporary hand, notes about details of sailing conditions. On the front pastedown is a square sheet with notes on "Carryford's Reef" (Florida Keys?) with long. and lat. and details on landmarks for avoiding it. This copy has all the appearances of having been owned and well used by a mariner of the period, probably a captain. Naut. RGR.
