New York: A.S. Barnes and Company, 1898. Second Edition. Cloth. Near fine. Second edition of An American Cruiser in the East by John D. Ford.. Octavo, xiv, 537pp. Blue cloth, title in gilt on spine, illustration stamped in color and gilt on front cover. No additional printings on copyright page. Solid text block, spotting to front cover, faint sunning to spine, top edge dyed gray, both hinges starting to separate, but solid, a near fine example. Rear Admiral John D. Ford (1840-1918) entered the Navy as a third assistant engineer in 1862. Ford worked his way through the ranks while progressing his education in mechanical engineering. He was fleet engineer for the Pacific Squadron in 1898, serving aboard the USS Baltimore during the Battle of Manila Bay for Admiral of the Navy George Dewey. This second edition includes a chapter specifically dedicated to the Battle of Manila.
