About This Item
Kingsport, TN: Kingsport Press, Inc, 1963. Hardcover. Small 4to. Tan cloth spine and decorated paper over boards, slipcase. 88pp. Line drawings. Fine/fine. First edition, limited to 1250 copies. Lovely anthology designed by Stefan Salter and illustrated by Fritz Kredel. Contributors include Louis Bromfield, Hamlin Garland and Paul Engle. This copy bears a choice autograph addition: Tipped to an inner flyleaf is a Typed Letter Signed from Angle, 1p, 8½" X 11", Springfield, IL, 1944 October 17. Addressed to Virginia Goldberg. Near fine. On "Illinois State Historical Library" letterhead, which cites Angle as "State Historian," he discusses bookish matters with this Abraham Lincoln Book Shop employee. In part: "...I will bring the galleys with me when I come up tomorrow [probably for 'The Great Chicago Fire,' which they published in 1946]." The bookshop must have quoted him some books, for he remarks: "We will want the Watkins book, Company Aytch, about which John [Valentine] wrote the other day, and at least some of the regimental histories from the list you submitted...." He also notes, "You may be interested to know that I am reviewing the third volume of Freeman's Lee's Lieutenants for the Sun. The review ought to be printed next Sunday. I am not particularly proud of the effort -- that was another thing that had to be skimped for want of sufficient time." Signed simply "Paul" in blue ink.
