Vol. 1 (1774-1850) is the Second Revised Edition, published in 1969. Bound in blue cloth in Fine condition with bright gilt title on the spine. Corners are sharp. Text block is tight, bright and unmarked. Page edges clean, though the top page edges are browned. Unclipped ($10.00) dust jacket has a slightly darkened spine with a 1/2 by 1/4" indentation and some shallow chipping at the foot. Vol. 2 (1851-1875) is the 1978 printing, labeled "Additions and Corrections Appended." Bound in red cloth in VG+ condition with bright gilt title on the spine. Corners are sharp. There is a small (1/8") darkened dot toward the bottom of the front cover Text block is tight, bright and unmarked. Page edges and bright and clean. A bookseller has made some annotations in pencil at the top corner of the free front end paper. Dust jacket has a darkened spine and sticker scar on the front panel in the top line of the frame around the title. Unclipped, but a bookseller's price sticker ($3.95) glued over the $10.00 price. Vol 3. is an Ex-Lib copy of the 1966 printing. Bound in gray cloth with bright silver title on the spine. Corners show minimal wear, though the rear corners are slightly turned in. Light wear at the head and foot of the spine. Front cover shaken. There are small bump marks on the bottom edges of the boards and a mark across the bottom page edges. Departmental library bookplate on the front paste down. Text block is bright and largely unmarked. The only library markings are a blind stamp at the bottom of the title page, penciled notations in the gutter of the dedication page and an accession number stamped at the lower corner of the page. Top page edges are lightly speckled and there is dark band across the bottom page edges at the outside edge Size: 9" -11" - Small Quarto (Sm. 4to). 411+438+683 pages. 3-volume set (complete).
