Illustrated soft cover/NF; showing faint discoloration w/light edge wear & trace soiling to back. Gift inscription to fEP. Compilation of some 150 traditional Indian dishes gathered from the Navajo, Hopi, Taos Pueblo, Havasupai, Zuni, Papago, Yavapai, and Apache tribes. Dr. Mike Robinson identified the plants and confirmed their botanical accuracy. Text in 6 parts: I, Cactus & Cactuslike Plants; II, Nuts & Seeds; III, Grapes, Berries, & Cherries; IV, Foods of Marsh & Mesa; V, Greens; and, VI, Agriculture. The uses for the ubiquitous (the Southwest and California) Manzanita berry are many. Besides eating raw or cooked, seeds were ground for mush. Manzanita teas were used for bronchitis & stomach trouble, a lotion to ease poison oak pain, and in baths for rheumatism. The book includes a recipe for Manzanita cider. Author is a professional journalist and food writer.
