About This Item
Albuquerque, NM: Fred Harvey, Indian Department, 1937. Sixth Edition. Softcover. VG- (Covers fairly good with no broken slots at plastic spiral though some show wear; interior is clean with vivid color plates.). Spiral bound. Black & illus. covers, [67 pp.], color plates. The sixth edition of a publication that was first released in 1913. The Fred Harvey Company "owned and managed restaurants, newsstands, and dining cars along the Atcheson, Topeka & Santa Fe Railroad. In 1898 Harvey's son-in-law John Frederick Huckel [1863-1936] founded the Fred Harvey Indian Department, appointing Herman Schweizer as the department's manager. Nicknamed the 'Harvey anthropologist,' Schweizer collected important examples of Native American artifacts, arts, and crafts -- including Hopi kachina dolls and Navajo silver -- and sold them to museums and collectors. ... The Harvey Company also marketed their goods and services to tourists who traveled west on the Santa Fe Railway, and helped to popularize the Southwest as a tourist destination." (Judith A. Barter, Window on the West: Chicago and the Art of the New Frontier, 1890-1940, p. 153.).
