Serle was secretary to Admiral Lord Howe during Howe's years in America . Serle was well educated , a very good writer , and was dedicated to the maintenance of this journal . His descriptions of the British landing in New York , their stay there , and their time in Philadelphia is recorded in detail . Serle spent time with many American Loyalists and the journal is very descriptive of their feelings and their stories . Introduction by Tatum in which he corrects some mistakes by Paul Worthington Ford , Dumas Malone and other scholars in their writings about Serle . Maps . Drawings . Note on the Transcription .
