About This Item
1911. A four page hand written letter on textured paper (bamboo like surface) with a color image titled "View of Miyajima, Aki", dated August 5, 1911. Describing a trip from Yokohama to Kobe, with many details on life in Japan at the time, including descriptions of Mt. Fujiyama, the construction of native boats with wooden pegs, the taking on of the crew of the Empress "which was wrecked about a week ago". Also a description of Kobe's mountains, falls, and food. With an illustration of the famous Itsukushima shrine's red entrance gate, or torii, built over the water. This shrine has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and is dedicated to the three daughters of the Shinto deity of seas and storms. Folded, 4 3/4 x 7". Very good. HK580.
