Description:
1981. After receiving the Republican nomination in the 1980 presidential election, Reagan selected one of his opponents in the primaries, George H. W. Bush (who would succeed him in 1989), to be his running mate. Reagan was 69 years old when he was sworn into office for his first term on January 20, 1981. In his inaugural address, he addressed the country's economic malaise, arguing: "In this present crisis, government is not the solution to our problems; government is the problem." As vice president, Bush generally maintained a low profile, recognizing the constitutional limits of the office, and enjoyed good relationships with the Reagan family and staffers.
