Warmly inscribed by the author on the inside front cover to Bob Sales: "Whose opinions I so very much respect and who contributed to this piece more than he suspects. My deep thanks, [signed] Sey Betsky.". Considers the state of trade fiction publishing in the United States, drawing heavily from approaches used by British scholars of the press who published the journal Scrutiny. Extensive footnotes and an appendix of publisher mergers. Betsky was a professor of American literature at Utrecht University, this talk delivered on the occasion of his retirement from that post.
